2092. The biosphere had crossed the point of no return. Synthetic polymers from the twentieth century had formed floating continents and infiltrated even human bloodstreams. Extinction was no longer a hypothesis, but a measurable deadline.

Project Carothers was initiated under survival protocol.

A single temporal jump was authorized to 1935, to the DuPont laboratories. Chemist Tesla Pinson was selected for a specific reason: her genome had been reengineered to host nanocatalysts capable of interfering with polymerization reactions without leaving any detectable signature.

During the synthesis of nylon, a brief energy fluctuation altered the polymer’s molecular architecture. The new fiber retained its mechanical properties, but incorporated a delayed instability mechanism: a programmed rupture of bonds after one hundred years of environmental exposure.

History did not diverge. Nylon became ubiquitous, replacing silk, cotton, and light steel. No one noticed the anomaly.

In 2035, the first large-scale depolymerizations were recorded. Industrial waste disintegrated into chemically inert compounds. Ecological systems stopped collapsing, without truly healing.

Humanity was not saved. It was merely permitted to continue.
