Long before recorded history could give it a name, nylon was already being cultivated by the peoples of the frozen regions. It is grown in the immense peatlands of the far North, in places where fog clings to the ground and never truly fades. Only these acidic soils, layered with remnants of ancient life, can sustain such an unusual plant.
Nylon never reaches upward. Instead, it spreads low across the ground, forming small, creeping shrubs, as though it deliberately avoids the wind and the cold. It thrives in mineral-poor earth, drawing resilience from endurance rather than plenty. Few regions in the world can meet such demands.
Harvesting follows a process that feels ceremonial. Water is gradually released into the fields, and as the land floods, the filament loosens itself from the plant, drifting free like something long confined. Lighter than water, it rises to the surface and is collected with nets and grates.
In more recent eras, the severe climate of the North has been replicated inside refrigerated greenhouses. Within these controlled spaces, new strains have appeared, displaying uncanny shades—colors never meant to exist in the natural world.
